Late goal by Pemberton moves Wayne State to 2-0 in league play

After securing a road victory to begin NSIC play during the week, the Wayne State College women’s soccer program was back on their home pitch for more league action.

From the WSC Soccer Complex, the Wildcats hosted Sioux Falls on Sunday during Senior Day.

With minimal time remaining, Wayne State College scored once and held onto the 1-0 victory. WSC is now 3-2-1 overall and 2-0 NSIC as the Cougars fell to 0-5 (0-1 NSIC).

Seniors recognized included Sidney Truman, Morgan Rhodes, Erin Peters, Sydney Schnase, Neleah Dunlap, Kaelyn Reeves, Riann Daas, Haley Hoffman, Halena Handel and Maia Vacks.

Paige Pemberton was the lone goal scorer in the 85th minute (84:21) off an assist by Maia Vacks.

Pemberton attempted two shots, one on goal and in the back of the net while Vacks added five shots, two on goal with an assist.

Riann Daas and Neleah Dunlap both added two shot attempts with one on goal; Erin Peters, Sydney Schnase and Kaylee Herall all had a shot on goal as Jordan Bedard, Morgan Rhodes and Halena Handel all had one shot attempt.

Sidney Truman was in goal all 90 minutes. She recorded four saves.

Wayne State College outshot Sioux Falls 17-7, 8-4 on goal. WSC recorded four corner kicks compared to two by USF.

There were also eight fouls on Sioux Falls, six by Wayne State College as both teams had two yellow cards.

The Wayne State College women’s soccer team will next host Minnesota Duluth on Friday, September 27 at 3 p.m. and entertain St. Cloud State on Sunday, September 29 at 1 p.m.
