LCC secures season-opening wins at Creighton, splits at Crofton

A pair of games took over the season-opening week for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls and boys high school basketball.

LCC visited Creighton on Thursday, Dec. 5 before traveling to Crofton on Friday, Dec. 6.

In girls action, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge first won 70-26 before suffering an 86-39 loss at Crofton. The Bears are 1-1 on the season.

From the win over Creighton, LCC jumped ahead 21-8 in the first quarter and followed with a 23-6 second. The Bears led 44-14 at the break. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge also outscored Creighton, 19-7 in the third and 7-5 in the fourth. Final favored LCC winning 70-26.

Three players hit double figures led by sophomore Rena Rasmussen who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore Kaida Eriksen followed with 11 points, five steals and three blocks as sophomore Carlie Kvols added 10 points and five assists.

Other scoring came from sophomore Hattie McCorkindale with eight points, junior Tyler Recob and senior Lainey Schutte both scored six points; junior Karli Kerris and sophomore Justice Olson each tallied three points as junior Camryn Sohler finished with two points.

In the loss against Crofton, no quarter scoring was provided as Crofton won 86-39.

Rasmussen led LCC with 18 points, followed by Kvols with seven points and five rebounds as Recob added six points.

Other scoring came from McCorkindale with four points as Eriksen and Schutte both had two points. Sohler led the Bears with two assists.

During the boys competition, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge won 67-35 at Creigton and also came away with a 65-49 victory at Crofton. The Bears are 2-0 on the season.

From the victory at Creighton, Creighton held a 10-9 advantage after the opening quarter followed by LCC using a 15-13 second to take a 24-23 lead at the break. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge then began to pull away in the third thanks to a 19-6 quarter and fourth, 24-6. Final favored LCC winning 67-35.

Senior Gibson Roberts posted a team-high 18 points and three steals followed by sophomore Cade Johnson who added 16 points and eight rebounds.

Other scoring came from senior Caleb Erwin with eight points, senior Eli Haisch tallied six points and six assists, sophomore Tanner Thompson and senior Carter Korth both had five points, freshman Parker Hoeppner tacked on three points as two-point scoring came from freshman Drey Puppe, senior Conner Korth and freshman Dayton Korth.

In the win at Crofton, the host Warriors held a 16-15 lead in the first quarter while the Bears answered with a 20-15 second to lead 35-31 at the half. LCC would outscore Crofton, 18-13 in the third and 12-5 in the fourth. Final favored Laurel-Concord-Coleridge winning 65-49.

Roberts posted 34 points, seven rebounds and three assists on 14-28 from the field including four made three’s and 2-2 at the foul line. Haisch followed with 13 points on three made three’s.

Other scoring came from Caleb Erwin with seven points, seven rebounds, three steals and three assists, Conner Korth added five points and seven rebounds, sophomore Cade Johnson tallied four points as Carter Korth finished with two points.

The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge girls and boys basketball teams will visit Homer on Tuesday, Dec. 10 before also hosting Tri County Northeast on Friday, Dec. 13.
