It was a rough night at the office for both Wayne American Legion baseball teams Wednesday, as the Juniors and Seniors both fell to West Point in action at Hank Overin Field.
In the Juniors game, West point broke open a close game in the seventh with three runs to come away with a 5-2 win over Wayne.
Wayne trailed 2-0 in the sixth until Reid Korth scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyrus Eischeid to make it a 2-1 game.
West Point used an RBI single and a wild pitch that scored two runs to put the game out of reach. Wayne would get a run in the bottom of the seventh when Hagan Miller scored on a wild pitch, but could not get any closer as they fell to 4-1 on the season.
Trevor DeBoer took the loss on the mound for Wayne, but helped the offensive cause by going 2-for-4 in the game. Josh Lutt had the only other hit for the Wayne Juniors.
In the Seniors game, Wayne’s offense sputtered as West Point jumped on the locals early and came away with a 10-2 win.
A six-run third inning put West Point in position for the easy win. They added three more in the fourth and ended the game on the eight-run mercy rule after five innings to drop Wayne to 4-1.
Wayne got two runs in the fifth inning when Tyler Lutt singled home Caden Korth and Caleb Anderson. Wayne managed just five hits in the contest, with Korth, Anderson, Isaac Camarena and Adam Bentjen also recording hits. Tucker Nichols took the loss on the mound.
Both teams are back in action Friday with a doubleheader at Scribner, starting at 5:45 p.m. The Juniors head to Fort Calhoun for a tournament on Saturday and Sunday before returning home for a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Yankton on Tuesday.
