Four Wayne Volunteer firefighters were among the hundreds of volunteers from throughout the state who have provided assistance fighting wildfires occurring in central and western Nebraska.

Jordan Widner, Brent Doring, Josh Doring and Kalli Reese left Wayne just after 5 p.m. on Saturday (March 14) and arrived in North Platte approximately five hours later.

In North Platte, there were at least five other groups of individuals who were working in rotating shifts to help stop the spread of the fires.

Food and drinks were available to the firefighters who received a bag to put their choices in for the day as they were not able to come back to the incident command area.

The group was sent to check structures in the affected area and look for hot spots.

After being released from their assignment at 8 p.m. on Sunday, they went back to North Platte for the night.

Monday was a repeat of Sunday's activities with the group heading back to the Brady area.

The firefighters spent the day clearing trees and other work in an attempt to stop the fire from spreading.

Two helicopters were assisting in the area. Brent Doring said that while the Wayne firefighters were there, the two helicopters dropped 18 loads of water on the fire.

After being released from their assignment at 7:45 p.m. on Monday (March 16), the group headed back to North Platte to collect their belonging and returned to Wayne at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
