Looking Ahead in Wayne

City Council meetings

Regular Wayne City Council meetings are at 5:30 pm on the first and third Mondays of each month in City Hall at 513 Main Street. City government can get quite entertaining at times. You don’t want to miss that! Join us; we get lonely.

Final Budget

At its Sept 21 meeting, the City Council passed the budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

"Passing the budget" includes 3 different actions. The Council first sets the tax levy for the next year. It then approves the actual budget document (includes both the revenues and expenses). Finally, the Council approves the annual appropriations ordinance to legally expend the money in the budget.

Most of the budget attention goes to the setting of the tax rate. The combined City property tax ask for General operations and debt will be $1,673,963.62. Additional property taxes are levied for airport operations, airport debt, and the Community Redevelopment Authority (CRA). The total combined levy for all City functions is $0.440986 per $100 of valuation. So, for example, if your real estate is assessed at $200,000 for 2026, your property tax liability to the City of Wayne will be $881.97.

*Your tax bill as a resident of the City of Wayne will obviously be more than this, with a total figured once the other taxing entities set their budgets (eg Wayne County, Wayne Community Schools, Northeast Community College, Natural Resource District (NRD), Educational Service Unit (ESU), and the Wayne County Ag Society (County Fair)). If you ever want to talk to staff about the budget and/or the process, top in and talk to us.

The new fiscal year starts on Oct. 1.

Christmas in Wayne –

Shop Local

That heading is accurate! The Christmas in Wayne kickoff has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 19. At a previous Council meeting, the street closure and parking restrictions were approved for that evening. While it is early in the season for the kickoff to Christmas, the economic development office does this to assist local businesses to accommodate the consumer before the consumer heads out of town or online for their early holiday shopping. As always, shop local on everything that you can before looking out of town or online.

Electronic Recycling Recap

I want to give a huge shout out and thank you to all who made this year’s electronic recycling event a success. From Sandy Brown’s efforts and the Wayne Green Team, to the Wayne State College athletes, the event ran smoothly and provided a great service once again to our community. This was the second year using the property at 1100 East 10th Street. This location has proven to be much more efficient than using/closing a City street. I am sure this event is here to stay (of course depending on what comes of this City property). Thanks again to all who helped recycle right.
