Many shelves bare at Wayne Food Pantry

As the summer progresses, more and more shelves at the Wayne Food Pantry are looking a little bare.

Although there could be many reasons for this, Wayne Food Pantry Volunteer Deb Daehnke, said donations are generally less in the summer and in recent weeks there have been more requests for food from the Food Pantry.

"For the first time that I can remember, I will have to order macaroni & cheese. This is something we usually have plenty of," said Daehnke.

She said also on the list of items in short supply are tuna, tomatoes  (canned), saltine crackers, hamburger helper, pasta of any kind, pancake mix and syrup, any type of canned soup and instant rice.

"Two things we are always in need of are cereal and any type of canned fruit," Daehnke said.

She said that in recent weeks she has been making up approximately 10 boxes of food per week to have on hand for those needing assistance.

The Wayne Food Pantry is located at the First Presbyterian Church and is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Friday.

Those using the Wayne Food Pantry are generally given approximately one month's worth of food. In addition to the non-perishable food they receive at the Food Pantry, they are given a voucher to be used at either of the grocery stores in Wayne to purchase perishable items.

Daehnke said she buys all the supplies needed at the Food Pantry locally and "the stores are super helpful when we need to do this."

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Wayne Food Pantry may do so by dropping off items at either of the grocery stores in Wayne or at the First Presbyterian Church Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m.  to noon.

In addition, monetary donations may be made by sending a check to First Presbyterian Church, 216 West Third Street, Wayne, NE 68787.
