Mary (Husmann) Sorensen

Mary (Husmann) Sorensen, 100, of Pilger, died Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk.

 Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24 at the The Rock Museum and Chapel in Pilger, with Rev. Deb Hammer officiating.  Burial will be in the Pilger Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the Cooper Family Community Center.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.  

Minnick Funeral Home in Wisner is assisting the family with the arrangements.  

The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Historical Society of Stanton County or the Cooper Family Community Center.

Mary Ann (Lueninghoener) Husmann Sorensen was born Sept. 11, 1923 at Randolph to Walter and Laura (Koehn) Lueninghoener. The family moved to a farm near Pilger in 1924. Mary was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pilger. She attended Pilger Elementary and Pilger High School.

On April 6, 1941, she married Norbert Husmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Beemer.  The couple was engaged in farming and had three sons, Lyle, Jerald and Leon.  Mary worked at Dale Electronics in Norfolk.  Norbert passed away on Nov. 15, 1976. In 1977 Mary moved to Wayne and began working as a cook at the Providence Medical Center until she retired at the age of 79.

 On October 9, 2002, she married Niels Sorensen at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont.  Mary and Niels lived in St. George, Utah for 12 years before returning to Pilger.  Niels passed away on Feb. 27, 2020.

 Mary was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pilger, its LWML, sewing club and several card clubs. Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, and tending to her flowers.  She loved having the grandchildren around on Sunday afternoons.

Survivors include her son, Lyle and Cheryl Husmann of Pilger, and family - Amy and Floyd Mulford and children - Shelby Mulford and fiance Harlle Hledik, Zakary Mulford; son, Leon Husmann of Pilger and family - Angela and Joe Denton and family - Abby and Kyle Skokan and children - Blayke and Brayden, Jacob Denton, Kristie and Dallas Webb and family - Jared Webb, Marysa Webb, Chaz and Brooke Webb and children - Anzleigh and Dakotah and Justin and Bailey Husmann; step-daughter, Margaret and Jerry Snurr of Broken Bow and family; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Laura Lueninghoener; husbands, Norbert Husmann and Niels Sorensen; son, Jerald in 1944; daughter-in-law-Cindy Husmann; grandchildren, Laura Husmann and Michael Husmann,; twin sister, Betty Hamiliton and brother, Don Lueninghoener.
