University of Mary pounded out 27 hits against Wayne State pitching on Sunday, posting a doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats by scores of 11-3 in five innings and 7-4 in nine innings at the Chapman Complex.
A nine-run third inning helped the Marauders take control of the first game, overcoming an early 3-2 deficit to win the opener.
After Mary scored two in the top of the first, Wayne State came back with three in the bottom of the inning, thanks to Alyssa Schropp’s two-run single and an RBI double by Rachel Shumaker.
Mary’s big inning came on eight hits and three Wayne State errors, and the Marauders’ pitching was able to silence Wayne State after that to end the first game on the eight-run rule.
Shumaker doubled to highlight a four-hit effort while Katelyn Wobken, Monique Alyea and Schropp each singled. Riley Vanderveen took the loss.
Wayne State had a chance to win the game in regulation with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but left the bases loaded and Mary came away with the win in extra innings.
Wayne State trailed 4-3 going to the seventh when Wobken led off the inning with a double down the left field line. She advanced on a Mary error and was thrown out on a squeeze play at home. Monique Alyea reached on the fieler’s choice and came home on a Jordyn Breitbarth single to tie the game at 4-4.
In the ninth, Mary used two hits and two walks to score three runs and come away with the doubleheader sweep.
Melanie Alyea had two doubles and Wobken was 2-for-4 to lead a seven-hit attack. Breitbarth also had two hits and two RBI’s. Nataliah Hopkins worked all nine innings and took the loss.
Wayne State (7-29, 1-11 NSIC) visits Sioux Falls for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
