Mavericks roll to win over WSC women

Wayne State’s women’s basketball team fell to NSIC South Division leader Minnesota State Friday evening 95-58 in conference action in Mankato, Minn.

The Mavericks started the game strong, opening up an early lead on the Wildcats. WSC battled back from a 9-2 deficit to make the score 9-7 in favor of the host Mavericks. Minnesota State scored the next five points and at the first media timeout, Minnesota State led 14-7.

At the end of the first 10 minutes of play, Minnesota State led 20-10 over Wayne State.

The second quarter saw more of the same as Minnesota State increased their lead to as many as 22 in the second. Heading into halftime WSC was trailing 48-29 and they never challenged the Mavericks after that.

Logan Hughes paced WSC offensively with 15 points while freshman guard Abby Kopecky added 11 points. Junior guard Lauren Zacharias grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Hughes added five boards.

The Wildcats (9-12, 6-11 NSIC) close out their NSIC South Division road trip Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Concordia-St. Paul.
