The Wayne Green Team presented Micah’s Closet with its Zero Hero award recognizing outstanding work in reducing, reusing, and recycling within the community of Wayne.
Owned by the First United Methodist Church, Micah’s Closest has been operating since 2012. It accepts donations of clothing for resale to all family members in the community, including items such as baby clothes, prom dresses and interview clothes. During special holiday seasons, they also sell gently used toys and stuffed animals at little to no cost. The store is run entirely by an amazing group of volunteers, who keep it open five days a week.
Micah’s Closet makes a big impact at reducing waste. With more than 100 customers per month, they are saving more than 14,000 pounds of clothing and shoes a year from going to the landfill. For items that cannot be sold, they find creative ways to keep using them. For example, stained or unwearable items are donated as rags to local businesses, like auto garages and pet shelters. Very little is sent to the landfill.
