A trio of Wayne High wrestlers competed among Midwest Classic Nationals and Heartland National Duals over the weekend.
From the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, the 2025 Midwest Classic Nationals took place on Saturday, March 29.
Essynce Owens-Webb (106 – 115 lb.) was on the Nebraska Wrestling Academy and placed fifth at the Midwest Classic Nationals and earned All-American status.
Owens-Webb first suffered a loss by fall (1:59) to Keleigh Ochoa (Smith County WC) followed by three straight wins over Piper Terzoli (308 Wrestling Academy) by fall (0:26), over Audrina Bennett (unattached) by decision (3-0) and over Mailey Heckman (HWA) by fall (0:46. She dropped match in the consolation semi’s by fall (2:53) to Ochoa a second time but bounced back with a win by decision (6-0) over Lily Torres (Sedgwick County) to finish fifth.
Also in Kearney, Kimbree Rees (girls elementary 3rd – 5th 112 – 122 lb.) earned a runner-up finish representing the Wayne Wrestling Club. Rees suffered a first round loss by fall (0:35) against Swayzee Johnston (FoxFit) before picking up a win by fall (0:36) over Sofia Anderson (HWA).
The Heartland National Duals were held at the Mid America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa from Friday, March 28 – Sunday, March 30. Nyla Bolles (141) was a member of the Nebraska High School Girls Blue who took fourth during the duals. Bolles went 5-3.
She began with a win by tech fall (20-5, 2:03) over Tiara Faehnrich (Hill City, SD); followed by fall loss by fall (2:58) against Alexis Means (Wichita, KS); then won four straight of by fall (3:08) over Lily Weinreich (Clarinda, IA); by fall (0:24) over Lila Callister (Wyoming); by fall (2:51) over Weinreich a second time before avenging a loss to Means and won by fall (2:48). Bolles finished with losses to Chloe Sanders (Vinton, IA) by fall (2:31) and to Kayden Sipp (Hastings) by fall (1:34).
Also at the Mid America Center, Grady Maas (109) was on Nebraska High School Boys Red who took fifth. Grady Maas finished 0-7.
He suffered losses by major decision (18-5) to Vince Maturo (Overland Park, KS); by fall (1:24) against Jaxon Randle (Chickasha, OK); by fall (3:13) to Philip Streff (North Bend); tech fall (15-0, 1:24) against Cooper Smith (Wichita, KA); fall (4:10) to Leyton Elmquist (IAPWCHSB); decision (4-0) against Jyles Auble (Pierre, SD) and decision (9-3) to Jack Langner (Seward).
