Just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, (Oct. 13) the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a large gas leak in the 200 block of South Main Street in Wayne.

According to information provided by Wayne Fire Chief Jordan Widner, "upon arrival it was deemed necessary to evacuate structures south of the leak along Main Street. Highway 15 was also closed due to the leak being close to the highway. All emergency crews were released from the scene around 2:45 a.m. once the leak was mitigated. We were assisted on scene by Wayne Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Providence Medical Center ambulance, Winside Rescue, Wayne County Emergency Management, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska Department of Transportations, City of Wayne Utilities and Black Hill Energy."

According to Jennifer Peters, spokesperson for Black Hills Energy, "our first priority is to repair the damage as quickly as possible and make sure the leak is fully stopped."

The local Black Hills Energy team assessed the situation and crews from Norfolk also responded to the scene.

The location of the damage was difficult to access, causing crews to remain on scene until approximately 3 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 14).

All those impacted by the leak have been allowed to their homes and business as work continues on the repair.
