Multiple fire departments, along with farmers with discs spent several hours on Friday (Feb. 27) fighting a fire just northwest of Wayne.

Fire departments responded to the fire at approximately 1 p.m. and some members of the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department remained on the scene until after 5:30 p.m.

Assistance was provided by several law enforcement agencies, Wayne County and farmers who provided semi loads of water.

According to Wayne Fire Chief, approximately 60 firefighters from Wayne, Winside, Carroll, Wakefield, Laurel and Wisner worked to control the fire, contending with strong northwest winds.

Smoke from the fire caused the temporary evacuation of Bomgaars on the west edge of Wayne.

One firefighter was transported to Providence Medical Center for evaluation and later released.

The cause of fire has not yet been determined.

Wayne firefighters returned to the scene later Friday night after some of the trees that were burned re-ignited.

Extremely dry conditions continue throughout the area and Wayne and surrounding communities are currently under a burn ban with no burning of any kind allowed.
