Multiple three run innings too much for WSC baseball

One final regular season road outing closed out a three-game series for the Wayne State College baseball team.

Back at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the tie breaker was held Sunday afternoon in nine innings.

The Wildcats allowed a trio of three-run innings suffering a 9-6 loss to drop the series, 1-2. Wayne State College remained third in the NSIC (22-13) by one game falling to 26-18 overall as Northern State improved to 13-29 (9-26 NSIC).

During the single nine-inning game, Northern State plated their first three-run inning right away in the home half of the first inning.

Following a scoreless second, Wayne State College answered with their own three-run top of the third to tie the game up. Redshirt junior Cam Madsen began with a RBI double scoring junior Nate Cunningham; senior Chase Douglas added a RBI sac-fly bringing in sophomore Brayden Chaney as Madsen crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Neither team scored in the fourth as WSC added two more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-3.  Cunningham posted a solo homerun as Chaney scored on an error.

The host Wolves then regained the lead with a second three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to go up 6-5.

WSC wasn't backing down and tied the game up again thanks to a single run in the top of the seventh from Cunningham who scored on a passed ball.

NSU would close out scoring three more runs a half of an inning later.

Final in nine innings favored Northern State University winning 9-6 despite being outhit, 8-7. Both teams committed three errors.

Nate Cunningham posted a solo homerun, singled and scored three total runs; Brayden Chaney singled twice and scored twice; Cam Madsen doubled, drove in a run and scored as Chase Douglas doubled and drove in a run.

Senior Taylor Gill also singled twice.

Senior Kadyn Van Hill (16 pitches) suffered the loss in a third of an inning of relief allowing two runs (one earned) off two hits. Freshman Carson Obrecht (58) started the opening three innings allowing three earned runs off two hits while striking out two batters, walking four and hitting two.

Senior Josh Kilzer (45) worked two and a third allowing two runs (one earned) off one hit while striking out two batters, walking two and hitting one. Junior Adam Eggert (nine) pitched a third of an inning allowing one run off one hit.

Senior Eli Crnkovich (22) closed out the final two innings allowing an earned run off one hit while striking out two batters and walking one.

WSC will close out their regular season hosting Winona State on Friday, May 2 at noon and 2 p.m. followed by a Saturday, May 3 noon outing.
