Tucker Nichols threw a complete-game three-hit shutout to help Wayne/Wakefield to a 4-0 win over GACC/Scribner-Snyder/West Point-Beemer at Hank Overin Field.
Wayne/Wakefield broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Kaleb Anderson, pinch-running for Adam Bentjen, scored on a wild pitch to give the locals the 1-0 lead.
Wayne/Wakefield broke the game open in the fifth with three runs. Nichols singled to lead off the inning, then scored on a long double to center by Payten Gamble. Gamble then came home on a Lutt single, and Lutt followed him home on a double by Zane Jackson.
That was enough for Nichols, who went the distance and threw a three-hit shutout, with two of the hits coming in the seventh inning. He struck out seven and walked one to help Wayne/Wakefield improve to 3-5 on the season.
Wayne/Wakefield plays Tuesday at South Sioux City in a 4:30 p.m. matchup before returning home to host Norfolk in a 5 p.m. game.
