The Wayne State volleyball team got its season off on the right track, as the 13th ranked Wildcats posted four-set wins over Rollins (Fla.) and Eastern New Mexico in the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo.
In the opener, Jaci Brahmer had a double-double to help the Wildcats open with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-23, 25-14 win over Rollins. The redshirt freshman had 13 kills and 11 blocks while hitting .345 in her debut in a Wildcat uniform. Erin Gross added 12 kills and five blocks, Maria Wortmann chipped in eight kills and four blocks and Alyssa Ballenger had seven kills and 13 digs. Megan Gebhardt had 37 assists and seven blocks.
Defensively, Haley Kauth led four Wildcats in double figures in digs with 14, while Bree Ackerman had 13 and Hope Carter added 11.
In the second game, Wayne State forced 36 attack errors and posted a 25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-14 win over the Greyhounds.
Gross led the way with 13 kills and a .458 attack percentage while Wortmann put down 10 kills and five blocks. Ballenger had nine kills and Katie Stephens added eight. Gebhardt had 42 digs and three service aces.
Wayne State will play Western New Mexico on the second day of the tournament Saturday at 10 a.m. and will finish with 15th ranked Cal State-San Bernardino at 2 p.m.
