Pat M. Gross, 82, of Wayne, died Saturday, June 17, 2023 at his home at Kinship Pointe in Wayne.

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.,  Wednesday, June 21 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. Burial with military rites will be Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.

The family requests any memorial donations be made to St. Mary’s School Scholarship Fund, 412 E. 8th Street, Wayne, Nebraska  68787.

Patrick Martin Gross was born Feb. 21, 1941 to William Martin and Mary Frances (Surber) Gross in Wisner. The tenth of 13 children, Patrick grew up in Wisner and graduated from Wisner High School with the class of 1958.  After graduation, Patrick joined the United States Marine Corps and served from 1960 through 1964 in locations that included Kodiak, Alaska and Marine Corps Air Station in Santa Ana, California.  Upon discharge from the Marine Corps, he settled in Wayne, where he met and married his wife, Mary Joan (Doyle) Gross.

Patrick was employed by the State Nebraska Bank (formerly State National Bank and Trust Company) and the Triangle Finance Company for 40 years. In 2004 Patrick, retired as Senior Vice President and Loan Officer. He was active in his community throughout his life, spending four years on the Wayne City Council and belonging to numerous civic and charitable organizations including the Wayne Library Foundation, Wayne State College Foundation, Providence Medical Center Foundation, Goldenrod Hills Community Action, Wayne Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Community Care Hospice Group and the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department. In 1994, Patrick received the Wayne Citizen of the Year Award.  Over the years, Patrick was especially fond of time spent with the Wisner High School Alumni Association where he served on the Board and acted as Master of Ceremonies at many of the Alumni Association’s annual dinners.  

Patrick served as the National Weather Service Observer for Wayne for over 40 years. Patrick always enjoyed participating in and watching athletics, especially when his children participated. Patrick and Mary Jo supported their five children and five grandchildren in their school activities and were proud of their academic and professional accomplishments. 

On Oct. 23, 2004, after three years of formation and preparation, Patrick was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church. Patrick had a lifelong passion for helping others, especially the elderly, sick and less fortunate. Throughout his life, Patrick served his church and his community in very special ways.

Patrick was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo in May 2017; his parents, his brothers, William, Leo, Dominic and Gerald; and his sisters, Rita and Catherine.

Survivors include his daughters Francine Gross of Alexandria, Virginia, Amy Gross of Manhattan, Kansas (son John Doyle Pagen) and Mary Pat Gross of Lincoln; sons Daniel Gross (Kristi) of Lincoln, and their children Erin Pecena (Trevor), Matt Gross and Caty Gross; William Gross (Nicole) of Waverly and daughter, Marisa Gross; brothers, Joseph Gross (Rita) of Longmont, Colorado, Michael Gross of Denison, Iowa,  Stephen Gross (Debby) of Wayne and John Gross of Lincoln; sisters, Elizabeth Jindra (Leonard) of Norfolk and Bridget (Howard) McNiff of Cook, Nebraska.
