Philip W. Griess

Philip W. Griess, 83, of Wayne, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2023 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Wayne. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Wayne.

Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church in Wayne or the  Griess Family for later designation.

Arrangements are with Hasemann Funeral Home of Wayne.

Philip Wilmer Griess was born April 26, 1940 in York, to Wilmer and Elizabeth (Haberman) Griess. In 1945 the family moved to Wayne when his parents purchased Griess Rexall. He graduated from Wayne High School in 1958. He attended Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, where he graduated from the College of Pharmacy in 1963. Upon graduation he joined his father at Griess Rexall. Philip married Jean Wagner June 26, 1965, in Tilden.

In addition to Griess Rexall, he owned The Drugstore in Laurel for a few years. He purchased a Medicap Pharmacy where he worked until his retirement. Philip was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wayne. 

He was an avid golfer at the Wayne Country Club, owning the bragging rights to two hole-in-ones. After retirement, he enjoyed time with his family, traveling, playing bridge, reading and morning coffee with his friends. He was a life-long Husker fan who also enjoyed attending all local college and high school sporting events. 

Philip is survived by his wife, Jean, of Wayne; sons Timothy Griess and Kevin Griess, daughter Katherine and her husband Robert Scott, and their children, Emma and William, all of Lexington, South Carolina; sister-in-law Marilyn Bernstein, Lexington, South Carolina, brother-in-law Kenn Wagner and his wife, Mona, of Oconto, Neb. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Judith Griess.
