Pick’s 25 kills leads Wayne to four-set win over Scotus

Junior Lauren Pick racked up 25 kills and senior Emily Armstrong added 16 as Wayne came back to beat Columbus Scotus in four sets in their home opener Tuesday, 21-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-23.

The visiting Shamrocks got out to an early lead in the opening set, but Wayne came back strong with solid net play by Armstrong, Pick and Mikaela McManigal to even the match at a set apiece.

The final two sets went back-and-forth as both sides traded momentum swings. Wayne was able to come from a 22-19 deficit in the final set to put away the visitors and remain unbeaten at 7-0 on the season.

Along with Pick and Armstrong’s net efforts, McManigal added seven kills, Frankie Klausen put down four and Rubie Klausen had two. Emily Longe added a kill and Kiara Krusemark had one kill to go with her 53 set assists.

Hailey Backer had three of the team’s four ace serves and led the defense with 29 digs. Sydney Redden added 21 digs, Pick and Frankie Klausen each had 17, Armstrong had 13, Krusemark had seven and Erin O’Reilly had five. Armstrong had three blocks and McManigal had two.

Wayne plays in the North Bend Invitational on Saturday.
