Freshman starters Ryan Obrecht and Cade Herrmann couldn’t be touched by Bemidji State as the Wayne State baseball team posted a 5-2, 6-0 doubleheader sweep over the Beavers Friday at the Chapman Complex.
In the opener, Obrecht fired 6 2/3 innings of scoreless ball to carry the Wildcats to the win.
Wayne State scored a run in the first as Alex Logelin reached on a Beaver fielding error and came home on a Bryce Bisenius sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the third as Logelin singled to left and scored on a Bisenius two-run homer to right field.
Wayne State extended their lead to 5-0 in the sixth on Andrew Hanson’s RBI double down the left field line, scoring Travis Miller. Hanson later came home on a Garrett Graveline groundout.
Bemidji State avoided the shutout in the seventh, scoring two runs on three hits off Obrecht. Charles Hasty was called on to notch the final out with the bases loaded, earning his second save with a fly out to left field.
Wayne State had seven hits in the win, led by Hanson and Miller each going 2-for-3 with Hanson recording a double. Bisenius had a two-run homer and finished with three RBI while Logelin and Kyle Thompson also had hits.
Obrecht improved to 2-0 on the year with the win, giving up five hits and two runs with six strikeouts and one walk.
In the nightcap, five different Wildcat pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout, led by Herrmann’s five innings of shutout pitching.
The Wildcats built an early 4-0 advantage, using a Beaver error to score a run in the first and adding three more in the second, highlighted by a Brendan Madsen double and a two-run homer by Logelin.
Wayne State added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Bisenius, then put up one more in the eighth when Lorenzini doubled and came home on a double play.
Madsen led Wayne State’s nine-hit attack with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Miller also had two hits and Lorenzini scored three runs.
Herrmann earned the win, working five innings and allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Relievers Grant Carl, Mitch Gullikson, Aaron Ras and Josh Renken each worked an inning and the Wildcat defense was solid with three double plays turned in the contest.
The Wildcats (11-7, 2-3 NSIC) are scheduled to host Minnesota Duluth in a three-game NSIC series this weekend. Saturday’s action has been moved up to 10 a.m. in hopes of getting in at least one game before predicted rain hits the Wayne area.
