VALLEY — The Wayne American Legion Post 43 Juniors dropped a 9-1 decision to Waverly Tuesday afternoon in the B-3 Area tournament, suffering their first loss in the double-elimination tournament.

Wayne scored its only run in the second inning on a single by Mason Heikes that brought home Calvin Ankeny, who had reached on a two-out error.

Waverly followed that up with three runs in the bottom of the second, then blew up for six runs in the fourth inning. They held Wayne without a run in the top of the fifth to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule.

Heikes and Brody Munter both had hits for Wayne, with Munter recording a double. Zander Liston took the pitching loss, working three innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits.

With the loss, the 13-6 Juniors will face either Waverly or Springfield Wednesday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to this weekend’s Class B state tournament at Alliance.
