With an effort to build on previous finishes to qualify for the upcoming Norfolk Classic, the Wayne High girls and boys track & field team battled the rainy and windy conditions on Thursday.
From Schuyler, the Blue Devils joined six other programs during the Schuyler Invite. Following two lightning delays a finals-only running event invite took place with all field events canceled.
Scoring from the 11 events completed on the track, the Wayne High girls finished sixth with 28 points while the Blue Devils boys took fourth with 39 points.
In the girls division, Wahoo won the Schuyler Invite with 79 points, Aquinas Catholic (David City) was right behind in second (76), Blair took third (70), Columbus Scotus placed fourth (59) and Columbus Lakeview rounded out the top five teams with 35 points.
The Wayne High girls were led by junior Elle Powicki who finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.33) followed by junior Lilyan Hurner with a third place time in the 3200-meter run (13:22.38).
Junior Nyla Bolles took sixth in the 800-meter run (2:34.66).
In relays, the 4×400 of Bolles, freshman Kamden Dobbins, Powicki and freshman Alivia Kesting finished third (4:21.54) as did the 4×800 of Hurner, junior Kennasyn Blecke, junior Josie Ley and freshman Anna Dutcher (11:38.06). The 4×100 relay of freshman Courtney Roeber, junior Jacen Hasemann, sophomore Addison Frank and freshman Karla Wynia took sixth (56.2).
During the boys division, Columbus Lakeview won the Schuyler Invite with 92 points, Blair followed in second (76), Wahoo took third (62), Wayne placed fourth (39) and Aquinas Catholic (David City) rounded out the top five teams with 31 points.
The Wayne High boys were led by a gold medal from the 4×800-meter relay of junior Drew Miller, sophomore Emmanuel Gonzalez, sophomore Thomas Raymundo Baillio and senior Kasen York in a time of 8:42.59.
Miller also placed third in the 3200-meter run (11:21) followed by teammate sophomore Landen Claussen in fourth (11:22.6).
Freshman Angel Vargas Brizuela took third in the 300-meter hurdles (44.08) along with a fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.13).
York placed fourth the 800-meter run (2:08.06) followed by teammate sophomore Camden Hall in sixth (2:15.01).
Junior Boden Dobbins scored a team point at sixth in the 400-meter dash (55.09).
In other relays, the 4×400 of Dobbins, junior Taven Ocampo, sophomore Daevin Casarrubias and senior Ignacio Salemeron Diaz placed fifth (3:58.34) as the 4×100 of Vargas Brizuela, junior Austin Heiser, junior Grant Maas and sophomore Gabriel Armstrong took sixth (49.32).
