Project combines learning, fun

For the 14th year, students in Mike Jaixen's second grade clas have worked together to construct a classroom igloo.

"The original ones coincided with our Alaska studies unit and discussion about recycling.  Over the years, each igloo has used between 900 and 1100 jugs so an average of 1000 jugs, or around 14,000 that we've saved from going into the landfill," Mr. Jaixen said.

Following the completion of the project, the Waste Connections recycling truck comes to haul away all the jugs each year.

Jaixon said it usually takes the students about eight weeks to collect the necessary amount of jugs.

"This year we collected 1200 jugs, and using 1,055 of them, 137 10-inch hot glue sticks, and 14 1/2 hours of building over three days, we have our igloo," he said.

The kindergarteners help the second grade students count on their 100th day of school and Wayne State College athletes help with the project also.
