Saturday, September 13 closed out another busy week of Wayne Herald area sporting events.
Wayne High softball and volleyball took to the road, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and Wakefield joined each other for the second and final day of the Wakefield Volleyball Invite, Winside volleyball traveled to Creighton for a quadrangular WSC women's soccer had a home match, #25 WSC volleyball played two final matches during the Colorado Premier Challenge and the WSC football team visited Northern State University.
Wayne softball competed in the Omaha Mercy Round Robin on Saturday. The Blue Devils lost 11-5 against Bishop Neumann, won 5-2 over the host Mercy and suffered a 3-2 loss against Yutan-Mead.
Wayne is now 9-7 and will next visit North Bend on Monday for varsity only competition at 5:30 p.m. before hosting a triangular with Boone Central and Pierce starting at 4:30 p.m.
From North Bend, the Wayne High volleyball team was in action during the North Bend Invite. WHS opened with a 2-0 loss to Grand Island Central Catholic (19-25, 17-25) and followed with a 2-0 sweep over Freeman (31-29, 25-14) before closing with a three set loss against the host North Bend (25-18, 23-25, 14-25).
The Blue Devils are now 7-4 and will next visit GACC (West Point) on Tuesday, September 16 starting at 6 p.m.
Day two of Wakefield Volleyball Invite opened Saturday morning with final pool play games followed by championship and consolation bracket matches.
LCC swept Wakefield (25-10, 25-13) to close out their pool.
In the championship round, the Bears started with a 2-0 sweep over Elkhorn Valley (25-21, 25-18) and won the Wakefield Invite with a 2-1 victory over Pierce (24-26, 25-23, 25-19).
During the consolation portion, the Trojans suffered 2-0 losses to Cedar Catholic (16-25, 15-25) and Tekamah-Herman (20-25, 18-25).
The LCC volleyball team (9-0) will next host Neligh-Oakdale on Tuesday, September 16 starting at 5:30 p.m.
The Wakefield volleyball team (1-12) is back in action on Tuesday, September 16 hosting Howells-Dodge starting at 5:30 p.m.
From Creighton, the Winside volleyball program played a trio of matches. Winside opened with a three set loss against the host Creighton (no scores posted), won 2-1 over North Central (25-20, 23-25, 25-9) and closed with a match against Cody-Kilgore (scores found here once available).
The Wildcats (3-5, with one missing match) will next host Osmond and Homer starting at 5:30 p.m. during a home triangular
A second home match in a week showcased Wayne State College women's soccer taking on Midland University Saturday afternoon. WSC won 5-0 thanks to four second half goals.
The Wildcats (1-0-2) will next visit Minnesota Crookston on Friday, September 19 at 3 p.m. to open NSIC play.
Back in Denver for the Colorado Premier Challenge, #25 Wayne State College volleyball found themselves in the gold division. WSC suffered a four set loss against #15 Point Loma (CA) and won in four sets over Missouri Western (25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 25-21) to earn a third place finish in the gold bracket.
The Wildcats (6-2) will open NSIC play on the road at Minnesota Crookston on Friday, September 19 at 6 p.m.
Week two of the season marked the third Wayne State College football game which was also their first road game of 2025. WSC suffered a 26-7 loss at Northern State.
The Wildcats (1-2/1-1 NSIC) will remain on the road visiting MSU Moorhead on Saturday, September 20 at noon.
