With three of the next four at home, Wayne State College football concluded a series of back-to-back on the road.
From the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck, North Dakota, #24 WSC visited University of Mary.
The Wildcats picked up the tempo in the second half to win 30-0. WSC improved to 6-1 (5-1 NSIC) as University of Mary fell to 1-7 (0-7 NSIC).
Wayne State College last recorded a shutout win in 2021 and last began the season at 6-1 in 1993.
Following a 70-yard kickoff return from redshirt junior DJ McPherson, WSC was limited to a 30-yard field goal from sophomore placekicker Boston Hensley (13:10 remaining in first quarter). It marked the first field goal for WSC since September 5.
A second quarter score favored senior quarterback Nick Bohn on a one-yard sneak with 10:35 remaining in the second quarter.
WSC led 10-0 at the half.
Sophomore running back Latravious Boyd then scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on a nine yard run (9:08 left in third, PAT blocked). Boyd also scored from 12 yards in the fourth (12:42 remaining). Wayne State College led 23-0.
True freshman running back Brennan Hayes finished off a big day on the ground with a two-yard score (1:56 left in game).
Final favored Wayne State College winning 30-0. Last shutout was against Minot State University (48-0) on September 18, 2021.
Bohn finished 6-13 with 76 yards, one interception and sacked twice. Bohn ran the ball 11 times for 28 net yards and one score.
Hayes led the rushing attack on nine carries for 137 yards and one score as Boyd tallied two touchdowns on 10 carries and 31 yards. Senior wide receiver Jadon Johnson added two catches for 17 yards as redshirt freshman wide out Keaton Bonderson had one reception for 42 yards.
Senior linebackers Alex Schall (six solo/two tackles for loss) and Dexter Larsen (five solo/one TFL) led WSC with seven tackles.
Sophomore defensive lineman Carter Sitzman added six tackles (four solo) with three and a half tackles for loss and one and a half sacks. Other sacks came from redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jes Krcil (three tackles/two solo/1.5 TFL) with one and redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jackson Bos (four tackles/two solo/1.5 TFL) tacked on a half sack.
Defensive takeaways came from sophomore defensive back Joe Morrison and sophomore linebacker Clyde Hinton both with interceptions as redshirt freshman defensive lineman Austin McNulty recovered a fumble.
Wayne State College ran 52 plays for 296 yards (220 rushing/76 passing) as University of Mary totaled 215 yards on 69 plays (19 rushing/196 passing).
WSC was 4-10 on third down and 0-1 on fourth down as the Marauders went 4-17 on third down and 2-5 on fourth down.
#24 Wayne State College will next host Sioux Falls (RV) on Saturday, Oct. 26 at noon during the Hall of Fame weekend.
