Second half scoring surge leads to road Blue Devil victory

It was a spark in the first quarter and the ability to continue to run the ball for Wayne High en route to a Friday night victory.

From Brownell Talbot in Omaha, the visiting Blue Devils secured a 29-7 victory to improve to 1-2 on Sept. 12.

The host Raiders fell to 1-2.

Scoring opened in the first quarter for Wayne where sophomore quarterback Easton Endicott connected with senior Jace Jorgensen on a 25-yard touchdown.

After allowing a second quarter score, the game was tied at 7-7 going into half.

The message went through from head coach Russ Plager in the second half as Wayne produced 15 third quarter points.

Senior Dixon Zeledon used a 27-yard field goal followed by back-to-back touchdown runs from junior running back Cohen Olson (one/31 yards).

Senior tailback Taven Ocampo closed scoring with a 25-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

Wayne was 2-4 on extra points.

Endicott finished 8-12 for 129 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Ocampo rushed for 97 yards on 12 carries (long of 25) with a touchdown followed by Olson using 13 rushes for 69 yards (long of 31).

Jorgensen hauled in seven of the passes for 95 yards (long of 25) with one score. Fellow senior Parker Patefield also caught a 34-yard pass.

Junior William Patefield led the Blue Devil defense with nine tackles (seven solo).

Taven Ocampo (six solo/one tackle for loss) and Olson (five solo) both recorded seven tackles.

Junior Chase Nelson (three tackles/two solo) and freshman Rhys Hanish both picked up their second interception of the season as Parker Patefield (one solo stop) added two fumble recoveries.

Next up for Wayne will be their homecoming game on Friday, September 19 hosting Logan View/Scribner-Snyder. Kickoff from Bob Cunningham Field on the campus of Wayne State College is set for 7 p.m.
