The Wayne American Legion Seniors ended the regular season on an upbeat note with a 10-7 win over Fort Calhoun in the final day of the Yutan Tournament Sunday.
Wayne got on the board in the first inning on an RBI double by Payten Gamble and an RBI single by Justin Dean to take the early 2-0 lead.
Fort Calhoun put up five in the second to take their only lead of the game, but Wayne chipped away with two in the bottom of the inning when Caden Korth scored on an error and Adam Bentjen came home on Brennen O’Reilly’s groundout to shortstop.
Wayne tied the game in the third on Ben Klein’s RBI single that scored Zane Jackson, then took the lead for good with four in the fourth, thanks to a Gamble RBI double, an RBI single by Klein and a Fort Calhoun error. Wayne scored its final run in the fifth when O’Reilly came home on an error.
Gamble had three hits and Klein and Tucker Nichols each had two to lead an 11-hit attack for the 15-11 Seniors. Nichols went 6 2/3 innings and struck out six, while Korth got the final out to pick up the save.
Wayne is the No. 6 seed for the Class B Area 5 tournament that begins Friday at Hank Overin Field. Wayne will take on Ponca in a 7 p.m. game to open the tournament.
