Seniors stumble in Wood Bat Tourney

The Wayne American Legion Seniors needed an extra-inning win on Sunday to salvage a 1-2 weekend in the Max Greve Wood Bat Tournament.

In action Saturday, Wayne opened with an 8-0 loss to Beresford, S.D. The visitors scored two in the first inning, then added three runs in the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach.

Wayne was limited to four hits in the loss. Mason Lee, Tyler Lutt, Tucker Nichols and Ben Klein all had safeties for the locals. Nichols was credited with the loss.

A big inning in the fifth helped Bruning-Davenport-Shickley come away with a 6-1 win over Wayne in the second game of the day.

Wayne got on the board in the third inning when Tyler Lutt singled and later scored on a wild pitch. That lead would hold until the the fifth, when three hits and an error led to five runs for BDS. They would add another run in the seventh to finish out the win.

Nichols had two of Wayne’s five hits in the losing effort, including a triple. Justin Dean added a double. Lutt took the loss on the hill.

On Sunday, Wayne came back from a 3-0 deficit late and won the game in extra innings, coming away with a 4-3 win over Pierce.

Wayne got a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Adam Bentjen, scoring Nichols, then tied the game in the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Zane Jackson and Nichols. Wayne won the game in the eighth when Caden Korth’s suicide squeeze bunt scored Payten Gamble witht he winner.

Nichols and Bentjen both had two hits to lead a six-hit effort. Daniel Nuno got the win in relief.
