Wayne State baseball coach Alex Koch announced that seven student-athletes (six transfers, one high school) have signed national letters of intent and/or scholarship offers to join the Wildcat baseball program for the 2017-18 school year.
The seven additions – six transfers and one high school graduate – join seven high schoolers and one transfer who signed with Wayne State in the NCAA early signing period last November, bringing the total in the 2016 recruiting class to 15 players.
“We are bringing in another hard-working, talented group of young men,” said Koch. “We needed to address some issues on the mound and we believe we have done so this summer. The class is a good mix of young high school talent and transfers. Our freshmen are going to have a good opportunity to see some playing time on the field this year and our transfers should be able to step in and take over in a couple key positions for us this year.”
Cody Castro, a 5-foot-8 shortstop from Chula Vista, Calif., transfers to Wayne State after playing last season at New Mexico Highlands. He will have one season of eligibility with the Wildcats. Castro also played two years at Southwestern College in California.
Tandon Dorn, a 6-foot infielder from Filley, transfers to Wayne State after spending the last two years at Tusculum College in Tennessee and will have one year of eligibility with the Wildcats. Dorn also played two seasons at Southeast Community College in Beatrice, where he was a two-time All-Region selection in 2013 and 2014, batting .333 over two seasons.
David Janes, a 5-foot-9 catcher from Dubuque, Iowa, played the last two years at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Wildcats. Janes posted a .282 average this season for Ellsworth with eight homers, 10 doubles and 41 RBI to earn All-Region honorable mention honors and All-Conference Academic accolades both seasons at Ellsworth.
Jacob Lemar, a 6-foot catcher from Urbandale, Iowa, was a two-year starter at Waukee High School and played summer ball with the Twin Cities Baseball Academy.
Adam Poldberg, a 6-foot-4 left handed pitcher from Carter Lake, Iowa, transfers to Wayne State after spending the last two years at Emporia State in Kansas. Poldberg also played one year at Iowa Central Community College (2014) and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Wildcats.
Robert Ramsey, a 6-foot-4 first baseman/right handed pitcher from Omaha, played the last two years at Southeast Community College in Beatrice and will have two years of eligibility with the Wildcats. Ramsey hit .303 this season for the Storm with three homers and 39 RBI after posting a .297 batting average in 2015 with six homers, 17 doubles and 66 RBI while helping SCC win the regional championship.
Bobby St. Pierre, a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Windsor, Ontario, will have one season of eligibility with the Wildcats after playing the last two years at Madonna University in Michigan. In two years at Madonna, St. Pierre recorded 24 saves in 43 appearances with a 4-1 record and 1.48 ERA, striking out 54 batters in just 48.2 innings pitched. He set a school record with 13 saves this season.
