Seven-run second inning too much for Wayne

As conference and postseason softball approached, Class B Wayne High traveled to one of the top Class C programs in the state last Thursday.

From Timmerman Park in West Point, the Blue Devils visited Guardian Angles Central Catholic.

With majority of the runs being scored in one inning, the host Bluejays won 12-0 in three innings. GACC is now 23-4 as Wayne High fell to 16-9.

Following a scoreless first inning, GACC then poured in seven runs during the home half of the second inning. The Bluejays then added five more runs in the third inning. Final favored Guardian Angels Central Catholic winning 12-0 and outhitting Wayne, 11-1. WHS committed four errors compared to zero by GACC.

Nyla Bolles recorded the lone hit being a single for Wayne. Sammi Gubbels, Rylin Hall and Lilly Johnson all drew a walk.

  Sammi Gubbels (73) suffered the loss in two and two-thirds allowing 12 runs (nine earned) off 11 hits while striking out three batters and walking two.

The Wayne High softball team will next host the Mid State Conference Tournament from the Wayne Softball Complex on Saturday, Oct. 5 with games starting at 10 a.m. Head Blue Devil softball coach, Rob Sweetland is two wins away from reaching 600 career wins at Wayne High.
