SHOOTOUT DAY 2 — Wayne boys play for first, girls go for third

Wayne and Hartington Cedar Catholic will meet in the boys final while Pierce and Auburn duke it out in the girls championship game after Wednesday’s action in the Elkhorn Valley Bank Northeast Nebraska Shootout.

Highlighting Wednesday’s action was a wild six-overtime matchup between three-time defending C-1 state champion Auburn and Hartington Cedar Catholic. A half-court shot as time expired helped Cedar Catholic tie the game at 50-50, and it would take six extra periods before the Trojans finally came away with a 71-69 win.

Pender 61, Winnebago 50 — Avery Wegner scored 17 points and Maya Dolliver added 14 to help the Pender girls advance to the fifth-place game. Amani Means had a game-high 18 points and Charlize Freshman added 12 for the Indians.

LCC 64, Homer 47 — The Lady Bears built an 18-point halftime lead and finished off the Knights to move on to the fifth-place game. Kinsey Hall had a game-high 18 points while Jordan Urwiler and Haley Christensen both had 11 for the Lady Bears. Rylie Harris paced Homer with 16 points.

Pierce 53, Wayne 35 — Pierce pulled away in the second half to move on to the championship game, led by Elly Piper’s 16 points. Morgan Moeller and Payton Simmons also scoring in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Brooklyn Kruse was the lone Blue Devil in double figures with 10 points.

Auburn 49, Hartington CC 36 — Auburn used a balanced attack to outlast the Lady Trojans and advance to the championship game. Melody Billings and Olivia Swanson paced the Bulldogs with 10 points each. Katy Jones and Laney Kathol both had 10 points for Cedar.

Winnebago 71, Pender 59 — Winnebago led by as many as 21 and held off a second-half comeback by Pender to post the victory. Cordell Gunmaker scored 20 points, Dyan Berridge added 14 and Zaiden Bernie tossed in 11 for the winners. Pender’s Caleb Trimble led all scorers with 26 points, while Aiden Beckman added 11.

LCC 60, Homer 29 — The Bears used a balanced and deep scoring effort to defeat the Knights and move on to the fifth-place game. Dillon Olson, Jake Rath and Gibson Roberts each had eight points to lead the Bears. Homer’s Timmy Harris led all scorers with 13 points.

Wayne 42, Pierce 22 — Wayne showed some good discipline on offense and made the most of their opportunities to advance to the finals with a win over the Bluejays. Tanner Walling scored a game-high 12 points and Sedjro Agoumba added eight for the winners. Ben Brahmer led Pierce with eight points.

Hartington CC 71, Auburn 69 (6OT) — In the longest game played in the history of the Northeast Nebraska Shootout, Hartington Cedar Catholic bested three-time defending C-1 state champion Auburn in a six-overtime thriller. Cedar forced overtime with a half-court shot at the buzzer, tying the game at 50-50. Jaxson Bernecker had a game-high 25 points for the winners, with Tate Then adding 17 and Andrew Jones scoring 10. Four Bulldogs were in double figures, led by Marcus Hudson’s 19 points. Maverick Binder added 18 and Skyler Roybal and Austin Lavigne each had 11.
