Six Wildcats earn All-NSIC baseball honors

Six Wayne State baseball players were named to the 2019 NSIC All-Conference Baseball Team, as voted on by league coaches.

Senior third baseman Kyle Thompson and freshman pitcher Ryan Obrecht were named first-team All-NSIC, junior pitcher Hunter Wienhoff, sophomore outfielder Alex Logelin and sophomore designated hitter Andrew Hanson each collected second-team All-NSIC honors, with junior outfielder Brendan Madsen named to the NSIC Gold Glove Team.

Thompson, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior third baseman, earned first-team All-NSIC honors after leading Wayne State in batting this season with a .353 average. He led WSC in hits (60), total bases (97) and slugging percentage (.571), ranking eighth in the NSIC in total bases and slugging percentage, tied for eighth in RBI, tied for 10th in home runs (7) and tied for 11th in hits. He was named NSIC Player of the Week on Feb. 19 after hitting grand slams in back-to-back weeks to open the season at Northeastern State and Fort Hays State.

Obrecht, a 6-foot-4, 170-pound freshman pitcher, was named first-team All-NSIC after a stellar freshman season on the hill for the Wildcats. He posted a 7-1 record in 11 appearances and eight starts with a 1.53 ERA, ranking second in the NSIC and 10th in NCAA Division II. In 53 innings of work, Obrecht allowed just 36 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 47 batters with just 13 walks.

Obrecht had a streak of 21 1/3 scoreless innings late in the season that included three straight shutout wins at Minot State, at Winona State and vs. Concordia-St. Paul. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning vs. Concordia-St. Paul on April 24 and finished with a season-high 10 strikeouts and a one-hit shutout in a 11-0 win, resulting in NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors. Obrecht led the NSIC this season in opponent batting average (.191), fewest earned runs allowed (9), fewest hits allowed (36) and tied for fourth in wins (7). He was also one of just two pitchers in the NSIC this season to not allow a home run.

Wienhoff, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior, received second-team All-NSIC honors after leading the Wildcat pitching staff with an 8-2 record in 12 starts and a 2.13 ERA. He was the workhorse of Wildcat staff this season working six or more innings in eight of his 12 starts. Wienhoff pitched a team-high 71.2 innings this season and gave up 61 hits and 37 runs (17 earned) with 62 strikeouts and 25 walks. He tied for first in the league with starts, ranked second in the NSIC in innings pitched, tied for second in wins, fourth in ERA, ninth in opponent batting average (.225) and 10th in strikeouts.

Logelin, a 6-foot, 190-pound sophomore, collected second-team All-NSIC honors following a .309 batting average with five homers and 28 RBI. He led the NSIC in doubles this season with 20 and tied for fourth in the league with runs scored with 51 after starting all 48 games this season. Logelin ranked second on the Wildcat team in hits (55) and total bases (92) and was 11-12 in stolen bases this season.

Hanson, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound sophomore designated hitter, received second-team All-NSIC accolades with a .304 batting average this season. He produced five homers with 31 RBI and ranked second on the team in stolen bases (14-16) and was third on the team in hits with 52. Hanson went 4-for-6 with two homers and a career best six RBI at Fort Hays State (2/14/19).

Madsen, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound outfield junior, was named to the NSIC Gold Glove Team after recording just one error and a .989 fielding percentage making 45 starts in center field this season. Offensively, Madsen hit .292 with one homer and 23 RBI and led the Wildcat team with 28 walks and 16 stolen bases, tied for seventh in the NSIC in walks.
