The Wayne State women’s soccer team saw their winning streak end with a loss and a tie at home last week.

On Friday, MSU Moorhead scored a goal off a corner kick with just under 15 minutes remaining to give the visiting Dragons a 1-0 victory over Wayne State to snap the Wildcats’ three-game win streak.

Wayne State had the wind at their back in the first half and held a 10-1 advantage on shots over the Dragons, but could not find the back of the net with several shots sailing high on the Wildcats.

The Wildcats still maintained a shot advantage over Moorhead in the second half, but with just over 15 minutes to play the Dragons had three consecutive corner kicks and converted on the third one as Lindsay Brownell scored on a header in front of the goal off the corner kick from Mckenzie Ickert at the 75:39 mark for the lone goal of the contest.

Wayne State had one last chance to score with a corner kick with just over six minutes to play but could not get off a shot as the Dragons held on for the win.

Wayne State finished the contest with a 14-3 advantage in shots over Moorhead including 7-3 in shots on goal. The visiting Dragons had one more corner kick than WSC, 6-5, and were called for 15 fouls compared to eight on WSC.

Rylie Wehner had four shots for the Wildcats (one on goal) while Sophie Ketchmark recorded three shots with two on goal. Gabi Rosa also had two shots on goal for the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Rachel Grisham was credited with two saves in the contest while allowing one goal.

On Sunday, Megan Schuster’s header off a corner kick from Sophia Ketchmark with 3:33 left in regulation allowed Wayne State to salvage a 1-1 tie against Northern State at the WSC Soccer Pitch.

Northern State struck for a goal early in the second half as Shianne Rosselli blasted a long shot past Grisham at the 52:44 mark for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the final four minutes as Schuster placed a header past NSU goalkeeper Haley Hillstrom following a corner kick from Ketchmark with to send the contest into overtime tied at 1-1.

Wayne State got off three shots, all on goal, in the first overtime and had one shot with one corner kick in the second extra session but neither team could score.

The Wildcats finished with a 17-11 advantage in shots and 10-6 in shots on goal over the Wolves. Wayne State also held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Wehner and Megan Phillips each had four shots and two shots on goal for the Wildcats. Ketchmark and Brooke Worrel also had two shots on goal while Schuster scored with Ketchmark recording an assist. Grisham recorded five saves while allowing one goal in the contest.

Wayne State (5-4-4, 5-3-2 NSIC) will be on the road next weekend, visiting Bemidji State Friday at 6 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.
