Wayne State dropped a softball doubleheader on the road Saturday at Northern State, losing to the Wolves 9-8 and 10-2 in action at Aberdeen, S.D.

In the first game, the Wolves scored five runs in the fifth inning to come from behind and post the win.

Wayne State tied the game at 3-3 in the third when Monique Alyea hit a solo homer and Jordyn Breitbarth followed with a two-run shot.

Katelyn Wobken launched a three-run homer to cap a four-run fourth inning that gave Wayne State a 7-4 advantage. Jenna Stewart’s RBI single tied the game before Wobken cranked her round-tripper to give the Wildcats the three-run lead.

Northern came back with their big inning in the fifth. Wayne State got a run back in the sixth when Melanie Alyea singled her sister, Monique ALyea, home to make it 9-8, but Wayne State could not get the tying run after that.

Wayne State had 11 hits in the losing effort. Monique Alyea was 3-for-4 with a homer and a double while Breitbarth had two hits and two RBI’s. Stewart and Melanie Alyea each had two hits. Riley Vanderveen took the loss.

In the nightcap, the Wolves scored in every inning to finish off the sweep. Wayne State got both of its runs in the fourth inning, thanks to a Breitbarth double and a Northern error.

Breitbarth, Melanie Alyea and Abbie Hix each had hits in the game. Alison Niemeier took the loss in the circle.
