Softball team shut out by No. 9 Winona

Ninth-ranked Winona State used big innings in the opener and a dominant pitching performance in game two to sweep Wayne State 8-0 and 4-0 Thursday in NSIC softball action at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.

The Warriors exploded for five runs on four hits and one Wildcat error to break a scoreless tie in the third inning. The big hit of the inning came from Mariah Schultz, who hit a two-run homer.

The Warriors pushed across three more runs in the fourth on six hits to make the score 8-0 and win the game after five innings.

The Wildcats had four hits in the contest, as Katelyn Wobken, Jordyn Breitbarth, Emily Chandler and Annie Grammar each had singles. Freshman Maddie Moser (2-7) suffered the pitching loss with one inning of relief from sophomore Allison Niemeier.

In the nightcap, Winona State use a dominant pitching performance from sophomore Jordyn Kleman to complete the sweep of the Wildcats, as she no-hit the Wildcats while striking out 15 in seven innings.

Junior Riley Vanderveen was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out one. 

Wayne State (7-20, 1-7 NSIC) will be on the road Saturday at the University of Mary in an NSIC doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
