The Wayne High softball team picked up two wins and claimed first-place honors in the Mercy Invitational.
Getting a bye into the semifinals, Wayne opened with a 4-0 win over the host Monarchs, limiting them to one hit in the contest.
Wayne broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Aliah Schulz brought home Brianna Nissen with a groundout and after Taytum Sweetland scored on a wild pitch, Kendall Dorey lined a two-out double to bring home Amara Hurlbert for a 3-0 lead.
Wayne added another run in the fifth on a solo homer by Tori Kniesche, who finished the game with a one-hit shutout, striking out 18 batters in the six-inning game.
Dorey had three hits and Sweetland added two in the game, while Nissen recorded a triple. Schulz and Nicole Fertig also had hits.
In the finals, Kniesche threw a no-hitter in a 5-2 win over Bishop Neumann as the Blue Devils improved to 12-3 on the season.
Neumann’s runs came on a wild pitch and a steal of home, but the Blue Devil offense had more than enough to counter those Cavalier tallies and beat Neumann for the second time this season.
Kniesche brought home Dorey on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. In the second, a two-run double by Dorey scored Fertig and Hurlbert to give Wayne the lead for good, and they would add two more in the third on a groundout by Fertig and an error that scored Schulz.
Dorey and Hurlbert each had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack. Kniesche walked three batters and hit two while striking out 13. She has 194 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings pitched so far this season.
Wayne plays in a triangular Monday at Schuyler before coming home for a Tuesday triangular with Pierce and Boone Central/Newman Grove.
