Softballers get big win Thursday at GACC

WEST POINT – The Wayne High softball team spotted Guardian Angels Central Catholic a pair of first-inning runs, then pulled away late for a 7-2 win over the Bluejays in a battle of top-ten teams Thursday at Timmerman Park.
The Bluejays, ranked 10th in Class C, loaded the bases in the first and scored two runs, but Class B No. 9 got a run back in the second on an RBI double by Kortney Keller and took the lead for good in the fourth on Ashten Gibson’s two-run double.
Wayne added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Jenna Trenhaile, got two more in the sixth on Abby Ankeny’s two-run pinch-hit double and brought one more home in the seventh on an RBI single by Annie Kniesche.
Sydney Biggerstaff had two of Wayne’s nine hits and scored a pair of runs. Kiara Hochstein added a double to the offensive effort. Hannah Belt went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and allowing six hits and three walks.
Wayne, 19-3, is the top seed for the Mid State Conference that will be played Saturday in Pierce. They close out the regular season Monday at South Sioux City.
