Wayne State dropped a pair of road doubleheaders over the weekend to fall to 6-24 overall and 0-6 in NSIC play.
On Saturday, Concordia-St. Paul used late rallies in both games to defeat Wayne State College 7-4 and 11-9.
In the opener, the host Golden Bears erupted for a five-run fifth inning to erase a 2-1 Wildcat lead.
Wayne State scored in the top of the third when Sarah Hunter walked and later scored on a Monique Alyea RBI single. After the Golden Bears tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third, Wayne State regained the lead with a two-out rally in the fifth inning when Katelyn Wobken tripled and scored on Emily Chandler’s RBI single.
The Golden Bears came up with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, thanks to a pair of home runs, to highlight a five-run, five-hit inning. Wayne State got within a run on a two-run homer by Jordyn Breitbarth in the top of the sixth, but the hosts added a run in the bottom of the inning to go on to the win.
Monique Alyea was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead a seven-hit attack, while Breitbarth added a two-run homer. Wobken had a triple and a run scored while Melanie Alyea, Chandler and Shumaker each singled. Nataliah Hopkins suffered the pitching loss, charged with 11 hits and six runs over 5 2/3 innings. Allison Niemeier worked 1/3 of an inning and allowed one run on one hit with one walk.
In the second game, Concordia-St. Paul scored five runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to rally for the win.
Wayne State scored a in the third and three in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead. Wobken doubled and scored on a Concordia throwing error for the first run. Jenna Stewart had a two-run single in the fourth and later scored on a Wildcat pitch for the third run of the inning.
The Golden Bears scored five runs in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead, but Wayne State responded with three in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Shumaker singled and scored on a wild pitch while Wobken produced a two-run single to make it a 7-7 game.
The Golden Bears responded again and plated four runs in the fifth. Wayne State closed the scoring with two run in the top of the sixth on a Breitbarth RBI double and Alyssa Schropp’s run-scoring single, but Wayne State could get no closer.
Wayne State had 13 hits in the losing effort. Breitbarth was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored while Wobken ended 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Stewart was 2-for-3 with two RBI followed by Shumaker going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Riley Vanderveen was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings with six walks and one strikeout. Niemeier worked 1/3 inning and gave up three runs on two hits while Hopkins pitched one inning and was charged with one run on one hit.
On Sunday, 21st ranked Minnesota State dominated the Wildcats, posting a 12-1, 16-1 sweep in action at Mankato, Minn.
In the opener, the Mavericks scored six runs in the third and six more in the fourth inning while Wayne State scored its lone run in the top of the fourth on a solo homer by Melanie Alyea, which was the lone hit in the game.
Nataliah Hopkins was the losing pitcher with relief help from Allison Niemeier.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks pounded out 17 hits while scoring in every inning.
Wayne State scored first when Wobken singled and scored on a Shumaker single for a 1-0 Wildcat lead, but Minnesota State scored four in the first, followed it with five in the second and one in the third for a 10-1 lead. The Mavericks then scored six in the fourth to make the final score 16-1.
Wayne State had five hits in the contest, led by Emily Chandler going 2-for-3. Monique Alyea doubled while Wobken and Shumaker each singled. Hopkins suffered the pitching loss in the second game with relief coming from Vanderveen.
Wayne State (6-24, 0-6 NSIC) was scheduled to be at home Tuesday for its home opener against Winona State. They host Minot State and University of Mary in doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday.
