Some things old, some things new at 45th annual Chicken Show

With only a week to go before this year's event, organizers are sharing some 'egg' citing news about the 45th annual Wayne Chicken Show.

This year's theme is "Totally Rad," and a number of changes are being planned for the three-day celebration.

Events kick off on Friday, July 11 and continue through Sunday, July 13.

On Friday, attendees can come to the Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. on the Godfather's Patio at 106 South Main to get an update on weekend.

Those with a creative side can enter the Sidewalk Chalk competition from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with additional information available at the Blue Cat Gallery & Studio at 114 West Third Street.

A community painting project will take place at the window front at 214 Main Street at 4 p.m.

Chicken Storytime and a craft project will be available at the Wayne Public Library from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

A pie and ice cream social, hosted by the Order of the Eastern Star will take place from 5to 9 p.m. in the Wayne City Auditorium.

One of the biggest changes in this year's Chicken Show festivities is the location of the Henoween activities.

The main stage will  be located at 113 South Main Street in former Riley's location.

Beginning with the National Anthem at 5:30 p.m., Friday's lineup includes a Veteran's Poem at 5:35; Quilts of Valor presentation at 5:45 and the World's Largest Chicken Dance at 6:15 p.m.

Cutest Chick Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m. and the auction of cement chickens will take place at 6:45 p.m.

Anyone with a stomach of steel are invited to take part in the Saucy Hot Wing Eating Contest at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to the festivities on Main Street, a movie will be shown at the Majestic Theatre at 7 p.m. and a Senior Legion baseball game will be held at Hank Overin Field at the same time.

Friday's festivities conclude with live music begins at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage with music by Kody  Hess and 3D In Your Face.

Those who enjoy running can take part in the 5K and 1 mile Chicken Run Saturday morning, July 12 at Providence Medical Center.

The Kiwanis Omelet Feed will  be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Second and Main Street with indoor and outdoor seating.

A live rooster crowing contest will  beheld at Bressler Park at 9 a.m. and all are encouraged to rent one or bring their own.

Also starting at 9 a.m., and running to 3 p.m., is the Piece Makers Quilt Show at the Masonic Lodge, located across the street from Bressler Park.

Weather permitting, there will be Free Young Eagles Plane rides from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wayne Municipal Airport on East Highway 35.

One of the highlights of the Wayne Chicken Show is the parade, which starts at First and Main Streets and moves up Main Street to 10th Street before heading west on 10th Street to Lincoln Street and past Bressler Park before ending at Seventh and Lincoln Streets.

Other activities taking place throughout Wayne include 'Signs of Rural Life' art exhibit at Blue Cat Gallery, located at 114 West Third Street; planetarium shows hourly from noon to 5 p.m. at the Wayne State College Planetarium; a five-point partner pitch tournament at the Wayne Eagles Club, music by Paradox at Johnnie Bryrd Brewing from 2 to 4 p.m.; a movie at the Majestic Theatre at 2 p.m. and an all school reunion social and dance at the Wayne City Auditorium starting with a social at 6 p.m. and music by Sons of Satan at 8 p.m.

Activities at Bressler Park get underway at noon and include a free bubble experience and face painting, along with free ice cream at the southwest shelter in the park.

There will be chicken egg judging, chicken scratch for prizes, the live chicken flying contest and best Chicken Legs on a Human.

One of the highlights of the afternoon will be the National Cluck-off.  There are two categories - ages 13 and under and ages 14 and older. The winners in each of these categories will  these cluck (or crow) off to earn the National Championship, bragging rights and prize money.

The Hard Boiled Egg Eating contest involves eating as many hard boiled eggs as possible and earning prize money.

The Piece Makers quilt will be raffled off at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the Rubber Chicken Chuck, Egg Toss and Egg Drop and Catch, all of which will be held on Lincoln street, just east of the park.

In a change this year, the Light of the Sky Fireworks Show will be held on Saturday at 10 p.m. The fireworks will be shot off from the southeast portion of Wayne and attendees can view them from Hank Overin Field or from Prairie Park.

This year's Chicken Show wraps upon Sunday, July 13 with the Crowing Motors Kirk Sommerfeld Memorial Car Show on Second Street from Main to Pearl Streets. Cars can begin registration at 10 a.m. and the show runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Wayne County Museum, located at Seventh and Lincoln Streets, will be open for self-guided tours from 2 to 4 p.m.; a movie will be shown at the Majestic Theatre at 2 and live music by Paradox will be available at Johnnie Byrd Brewing.
