With a final push for the postseason, Wayne State College women’s soccer closed out their regular season Thursday late afternoon.
From the WSC Soccer Complex, the Wildcats welcomed Winona State.
Going into the day, WSC was sitting ninth (one spot out of the tournament) and needed a win and either a loss or tie from either Northern State or Bemidji State.
The Wildcats took care of their business thanks to a 1-0 victory to improve to 7-6-5 (6-4-4 NSIC) while Winona State ended their season at 6-8-2 (5-8-1 NSIC/10th). According to Wayne State Athletics, it was just the third win for WSC over Winona State in women’s soccer in 32 career meetings between the schools.
With Bemidji State winning, the Beavers remained ahead of WSC but Northern State lost and dropped to ninth allowing the Wildcats to jump into the NSIC Tournament with the #8 seed.
Alaina Sorensen scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season during the 53rd minute (52:08) of the match off an assist by Addison Walker. That held to the be the 1-0 final.
Sorensen took five shots with four on goal and one in the back of the net; Maia Vacks and Riann Daas both added one shot on goal as Walker had the assist.
Other shot attempts came from Morgan Rhodes, Erin Peters, Neleah Dunlap, Kaylee Herall and Paige Pemberton all with one.
Sidney Truman was in goal for all 90 minutes finishing with her sixth complete shutout of the season while adding eight saves.
Winona State outshot Wayne State College, 17-12 including 8-6 on goal. The host Wildcats recorded six corner kicks compared to four by WSU.
