Speech team earns conference runner-up trophy

As the season winds down, members of the Wayne High School speech team took part in the Mid-State Conference Invitational on Saturday at Hartington Cedar Catholic.

The following are results from the meet:

Alondra Vega, sixth in Poetry and fourth in Serious Prose; Nyamalo Kantai, fifth in Program Oral Interpretation; Parker Kesting, third in Extemporaneous; Ava Elliot, third in Persuasive; the Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Aidan Bohnert, Colby Raulston, Gabriel Armstrong, Gavin Anderson, and Johen Piper, third; Madalyn Franta, second in Entertainment; Colby Raulston, second in POI; and the Duet of Colby Raulston and Madalyn Franta; second.

Wayne also brought home a meet-high five individual event champions: 

Ceilus Ibarra in Poetry; Sophia Spieker in Entertainment; Alec Schaffer in Humorous; the Duet of Alec Schaffer and Aidan Bohnert; and the OID of Adreinne Anderson, Josie Ley, Kennasyn Blecke, Grace Junck, and Norah Armstrong. 

"By winning their events, these Blue Devil Speakers earned spots on the 2024 Mid-State All-Conference Speech Team," said Head Coach Dwaine Spieker.

In the team sweepstakes, Wayne finished in the runner-up position behind champion Boone Central.

Next up for the Blue Devil Speakers is the Pierce meet on Saturday, March 2. This meet was rescheduled from Jan. 13. The B-3 District Meet will be held at Wayne State College on Monday, March 11.
