Josh Spenner bettered his school record in the pole vault and Michaela Dendinger took first place in the discus to highlight the final weekend of the regular season for the Wayne State track and field teams.
Spenner cleared 15 feet, 7 1/4 inches Friday to eclipse his previous school mark of 15-6 1/2 set last May at the NSIC Championships. His mark was good for eighth place and an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Spenner also claimed a second place finish in the javelin at 160-2.
Brady Metz captured second place in the triple jump (47-6 1/2) and was fourth in the long jump (20-11 3/4). Braxton Adams took second in the 100-meter dash (11.12) and teammate Kole Heller was 10th (11.51). Allen Arauz came in fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.76) and Jordan Zautke was 10th in the 200-meter dash (22.59)
In women’s action, Shelby Roth took fifth in the high jump at 5-1, Melissa Kroll was eighth in the 400-meter dash (58.83) and Riana Noelle placed 10th in the triple jump (34-1 1/4).
Dendinger claimed top honors in the discus and added seconds in the shot put and hammer throw to lead the Wildcats at the Nebraska Invitational in Lincoln Saturday. She won the discus with a best mark of 164-11 1/2 and took second in the hammer throw (195-2) and shot put (50-11 1/2).
Also throwing were Kacie O’Connor, who took sixth in the discus (135-1 3/4), Tia Jones was seventh in the shot put (42-8 3/4) and Kes Burke took ninth in the hammer throw (136-10).
In men’s action, Jayle Hinkle took fourth in the shot put (48-2) while Matthew Nemec was sixth in the hammer throw at 166-11. Richard Sweeney was seventh in the hammer throw (163-7) while Dylan Kaup placed ninth (136-7).
Wayne State travels to St. Paul, Minn. Friday and Saturday for the Northern Sun Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
