The Wayne High boys basketball team earned their first trip to state since 2014 with a 55-41 win over Mitchell Saturday in the C1-7 district final at Lexington High School.
The Blue Devils trailed early before rebounding to take a 22-20 lead at the half. The Blue Devils continued that momentum into the second half and led by as many as eight points before Mitchell rallied to get within four. Wayne hit their final eight free throws in the last two minutes to seal the win and take a 20-6 record into the state tournament.
Trevor DeBoer came off the bench to score a team-high 12 points for the Blue Devils. Tanner Walling, Tyrus Eischeid and Shea Sweetland each had nine points and Josh Lutt and Cody Rogers added eight points apiece.
Wayne’s opponent and game time will be announced on Wednesday. The state tournament is set for March 12-14 in Lincoln.
