School is out for summer, but learning does not have to stop.
Nebraska Extension is encouraging families, caregivers, and early childhood professionals to keep children engaged through the 2026 STEAM Imagination Guides, inspired by this year’s Collaborative Summer Library Program theme, Unearth a Story.
The Collaborative Summer Library Program has provided summer programming resources to libraries across the country since 1987. Each year, the organization selects a national theme that libraries use to guide summer reading programs. Nebraska Extension develops STEAM Imagination Guides to complement that theme and provide families with easy-to-use learning extensions connected to high quality children’s books.
The 2026 theme, Unearth a Story, focuses on paleontology and archaeology.
Educators who have used the guides consistently share positive feedback, noting that the resources are engaging, easy to follow, and supportive of lesson planning. Families appreciate having simple, low-cost ideas that extend learning beyond the pages of a book while keeping children excited about reading throughout the summer months.
Libraries across Nebraska have received the list of books featured in this year’s program. While availability may vary by location, families are encouraged to contact their local library before purchasing titles.
