Strong start leads to 2-0 result for Wayne baseball

A second previously scheduled road outing was moved to a home contest in Wayne for the Blue Devil baseball team.

From Hank Overin Field in Wayne, WHS opened the week hosting Arlington on Monday.

Thanks to four runs in the first, Wayne High used enough defense to close out with a 5-1 victory. The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 while the visiting Eagles started their season at 0-1.

The Blue Devils began with a four-run home half of the first inning. Senior Calvin Ankeny drove in fellow senior Gavin Redden; junior Drew Reinhardt followed with a RBI base hit scoring senior Alex Rodriguez; Ankeny later scored on an error as junior Brodey Munter drove in Reinhardt.

Following three straight scoreless innings, WHS added one more run in the fifth when Redden scored on an Arlington error.

Arlington plated their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth.

Final favored Wayne High winning 5-1 while outhitting the Eagles, 8-3. WHS committed three errors compared to two by Arlington.

Gavin Redden singled, tripled and scored twice while Drew Reinhardt singled twice, drove in a run and scored.

Calvin Ankeny singled, drove in two runs and scored; Brodey Munter singled and drove in a run; sophomore Adrian Contreras and junior Parker Patefield both singled as Alex Rodriguez scored.

Sophomore Jaxson Kneifl (80 pitches) picked up the win in six innings allowing one run off three hits while striking out five batters, walking three and hitting one. Junior Brodrick Tiedtke (14) worked the final inning striking out one batter and hitting one.

The Wayne High baseball team is next scheduled to host Pender on Thursday and visit Malcolm on Friday for a triangular along with Fairbury.
