Students save lives, earn scholarships through summer blood drive program

Over the past five years, two dedicated college students, Logan Miller and Brooklyn Kruse, have made an incredible impact on their community by hosting 10 lifesaving blood drives and earning $5,000 in scholarships through LifeServe Blood Center’s scholarship program.

In the summer of 2024, Logan and Brooklyn took their commitment to service abroad, spending three months working as summer camp teachers for U.S. military dependents at Caserma Ederle, a U.S. Army base in Vicenza, Italy. While they were abroad, their siblings, Drew Miller and Delaney Kruse, stepped up to host the blood drive in their absence – continuing the tradition of giving and community service.

Thanks to their hard work and leadership, the drives resulted in:

469 presenting donors

95 first-time donors

491 units of blood collected

1,473 lives potentially saved

Logan is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UNMC (Northern Division on the NECC Campus in Norfolk) and plans to graduate in May 2027. She works as an EMT and CNA at Providence Medical Center (PMC) in Wayne and serves with the Wayne Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Logan intends to continue serving her community at PMC after graduation.

Brooklyn is working toward her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a middle level math and coaching endorsement at Wayne State College, where she is also a member of the Wildcat Basketball Team. She plans to graduate in December 2027 and hopes to begin a career in teaching and coaching.

“Not only did Logan and Brooklyn step up to serve their community, but they also inspired dozens of new donors to roll up their sleeves for the very first time,” said Kim Jensen Deitrich, Territory Representative for LifeServe Blood Center. “They are the perfect example of how young leaders can make a real, measurable difference.”

LifeServe’s scholarship program provides students the opportunity to earn up to $500 per blood drive hosted during summer and winter months. Scholarships are awarded based on donor recruitment and overall unit collection.
