The Lied Winside Public Library’s 2025 Summer Reading Program is in full swing, and it’s already been a season to remember.

With hands-on programs, imaginative book discussions, and educational experiences, the library has welcomed readers of all ages into a summer filled with learning and fun.

On June 18 Real Reptiles kicked off the programming with a "wildly popular" live animal show. Presenter Will Abler introduced a crowd of 77 curious attendees to a variety of fascinating creatures—including snakes, turtles, tortoises, a vibrant macaw, and even an alligator. The interactive program gave kids the chance to touch the reptiles, ask questions, and engage with science and nature.

Later that day, the library held its very first Preteen Book Club meeting, where 12 preteen readers gathered to discuss Firefly Summer by Morgan Watson. In addition to a lively book discussion, participants crafted their own glowing “firefly lanterns” and talked about the next book selection.

"It was a wonderful kickoff to what promises to be a fun and engaging series for our preteen readers," said Library Director Lara Lanphear.

The next special event featured Todd Young, professor of physics and astronomy at Wayne State College. Professor Young wowed the kids with a dynamic and interactive presentation on Earth’s atmosphere, planetary rotation, and how our solar system moves around the sun. It was both educational and inspiring.

Still to come this summer, attendees will be building squirrel picnic tables with Todd Greunke, enjoying classic story-times, and hosting the beloved Stuffed Animal Sleepover—a family favorite every year.

"We look forward to seeing you this summer!" Lanphear said.
