Susan J. Kvols, 68, of Laurel, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, surrounded by her family and the Nebraska Nurse Honor Guard at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.  

Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 10 from 5 until 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Laurel, with a prayer service starting at 7 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, Dec. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Laurel. Burial will be in the Laurel Cemetery.  

Memorials may be given to Providence Medical Center (1200 Providence Road, Wayne, Neb. 68787, c/o Susan Kvols Memorial) 

Arrangements are under the direction of Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home in Wakefield. 

Susan J. Kvols was born Nov. 11, 1955, to Felix and Mary (Tighe) Dorcey in Wayne. She was raised in the Catholic faith and was a lifelong devoted Catholic. She graduated from Wayne High School in 1974, and continued her education at Wayne State College and earned her Registered Nurse Degree from St. Joseph's College of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa.  

Susan married Rodney Kvols on July 28, 1978, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wayne. To this union, the couple had three boys. Susan was a caring and giving person. She started her nursing career at Providence Medical Center in April 1979, and was an RN there for over 40 years. In 1998 she became a Massage Therapist and provided services at Providence Medical Center, and she opened her own place the Muscle Shop in Laurel. 

Susan was an active Catholic and was a part of St. Mary’s Altar Society. She had a passionate love for her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her family and attending as many of their activities as possible. Susan enjoyed riding horses and being around animals. Her caring and giving personality was shown by her actions. Susan was a hospice volunteer and proud of the fact that she recently became a member of the Nebraska Nurse Honor Guard. But her giving didn’t stop there, Susan was an organ and tissue donor. Her last giving act was to help some individuals in need of an organ transplant. 

Survivors include her husband, Rod Kvols of Laurel; sons, Ryan (Katie) Kvols of Laurel, Tyler (Cassandra) Kvols of Laurel, Jared (Lindsay) Kvols of Laurel; grandchildren, Delaney Ehlers, Sutton Ehlers, Alex Kvols, Emma Kvols, Ethan Kvols, Dana Kvols; brothers and sisters, Mark (Mary) Dorcey, Jerry (Linda) Dorcey, John Dorcey (Sandie Raines), Tom (Greta) Dorcey, MaryAnn Dorcey and Kevin Dorcey; brothers and sisters-in-law, Judy (Dick) Schmitz, Janet (Darrell) Macklin, June Erwin, Roger (Linda) Kvols; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by, her parents; mother and father-in-law, Morris and Bonnie Kvols; brother-in-law, Tom Erwin; sister-in-law, Jane Zechmann.
