Sweetland to retire after 29 years in the classroom, experienced coach

Family has been the most important part of the career for Rob Sweetland with his career and success following suit.

Rob Sweetland from Wayne will be retiring at the end of this school year at Wayne Community Schools.

His family was always in his corner as Sweetland has enjoyed teaching and coaching in a smaller community.

The passion for teaching began with his first teaching position in 1997 as a K-4 PE teacher at Wayne Elementary.

During his time at Wayne Community Schools, Sweetland has taught the most in 7-8 PE/Health (12 years), followed by K-4 (10 yrs) and K-6 (seven years).

Ahead of his retirement he has coached all 24 seasons for the softball program and is wrapping up his 13th year leading the boys varsity basketball team. Sweetland closes with a varsity softball record of 620-154 (all-time Nebraska wins leader) and has achieved a career boys varsity basketball record of 232-118 following the 25-26 season.

Jill and Rob Sweetland have been married for 28 years. Jill has worked as the Director at First National Bank of Omaha for 30 years in Wayne.

Their son Shea, is 24 and works at Boys Town in Omaha as a Donor relations associate and is also an assistant boys basketball coach.

Their daughter Taytum, is 21 and she works at Lewis and Clark Regional Health as a Systems of Care Coordinator in the Yankton and Vermillion area in South Dakota. She also just got accepted into the USD graduate program for Social Work to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
