Three-run first fuels Wayne win over ranked Tigers

A two-run triple by Kennedy Maly fueled a three-run first inning that helped Wayne knock of top 10-ranked Tekamah-Herman 7-2 in a key non-conference softball matchup Thursday at the Wayne Softball Complex.
The Blue Devils got on the board right away against the visiting Tigers, who came into the game ranked No. 1 in the Lincoln Journal Star and No. 3 in the Omaha World-Herald in Class C. Kiara Hochstein opened with a walk and moved to third on a double by Jenna Trenhaile. Both came home on Maly’s triple to right, and Maly followed on a single by Sidney Biggerstaff to make it 3-0.
The Blue Devils added single runs in the second and third innings. Maly scored Ashten Gibson with a groundout in the second, while Kortney Keller doubled off the wall in center to bring home Jamie Gamble, who singled.
The Tigers finally got to starting pitcher Hannah Belt in the sixth, scoring two runs. Gibson came on in relief and struck out the final two batters of the inning, and Wayne got the two runs back in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a one-out double by Biggerstaff, scoring Hochstein and Trenhaile.
Trenhaile had three hits and scored twice for the 8-3 Blue Devils. Biggerstaff had twho hits and three RBI’s and Maly added three RBI’s to highlight the offense. Belt threw 5 1/3 innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and walking one. Gibson came on in relief and struck out four of the five batters she faced.
The Blue Devils play in the Omaha Mercy Invitational on Saturday.
